What is your talent? Contd.
Who is the gifted? Who is the talented?
A gifted person unlike the general notion is an all rounder.
The word gifted is often interchanged for talented.
But another school of thought sees the gifted person as an all rounder.
That means he or she is at home in all fields or aspect of life.
They therefore, concluded that, gifted persons are rare gems.
A gifted person is expected to be extra good that is,... a plus in every area.
The talented is an expert in a particular field at which he is most good and almost at home with it.
Identifying your talent?.
You have one hint ............above already.
What are you so good at and at home with?.
There are two categories into which I grouped talent though.
1. Shouting (Loud) talent.
2. Silent talent.
Shouting(Loud) talent:
Some talents are loud: that is you may easily observe or notice you have one.
You can’t just hide it. It's as if it goes along with you to single you out of a unique crowd or group of persons.
People may even talk about it.
Silent talent:
This is the tricky one. You may not know you have it. Very silent indeed. Particularly not encouraging if you don’t have the loud one.
Illustrating:
I remembered that sometime back at school, I had two friends.
Freddy and Philip.
Freddy we discovered was a gifted while Philip was talented.
Freddy peculiarities: He was an all rounder. He was at home in all subjects, in fact the best, always had the highest score in all subjects and best at all fields. He never seemed to makeany effort at studying. He enjoys delving into all fields. He has unusual clarity and understanding about things. He sees life with simplicity.
Philip peculiarities: He was not an all rounder. He was very at home with mathematical
problems and so had unusual likeness for mathematics,
physics and any subject or field that had something to do with calculation. He was never
at home with theoretical subjects. In fact Biology was never his specialty since he finds it difficult grasping it and history was never his likes also.He doesn’t make any effort at
grasping mathematical and analytic problems. He had to be cushioned up to grasp theoretical concepts.
Back then, how did I discover them?
How then do you discover your silent talent?

Discovering
your silent talent
How
do I discover my silent talent?
First
I will talk about how I discovered Freddy (the gifted) and
Philip
(the talented) back at college.
Actually
I wasn't actually on the look out for such personalities or
peculiarities.
We
were in the preliminary class at college, so we call it back then.
A mathematical problem was displayed on the board for us to
solve. It was based on what we called further mathematics (additional
mathematics). Looking round some students were already through with
solving it and the extroverted ones were anxiously indicating so by
raising up their pen.
Before
the solution was brought up by the instructor then, I had already
finished too, even long before the extroverts. I got it because I
understood it.
I
wasn't the type to raise up my pen though. You see, I am an
introvert, and the shy type at that.
However
I observed something remarkable. Sitting right by my side was a
gentle looking fellow whom I discovered...... No, discovery is not
the word, It suddenly dawned on me that He had finished solving the
problem at what I would say............ light
time
ahead of us all!. To be candid, I decided to make him the object of
my focus when another mathematical quiz was rolled out. He was
incredibly fast! In fact too fast for comfort. I had to nudge him to
inquire as to the how of his seemingly light speed approach to
solving the mathematical problems. I wanted to learn from him. I love
learning good things from people.
He
did answer me quite alright. Guess the the answer he gave
me.............
I
received one of the greatest surprise of my life when he said
“It's
as if the answer's been there all the time and so it just flows from my
arm to my pen”.
That was his reply and the only reasonable
explanation he could cook up for me to understand. I never recovered
from the shock till we left the lecture theater.
What
added to my shock?. I wanted to emulate his speed and compete with
him. I really had the know how of those sums myself at my finger
tips! I could be very fast with bringing up solutions to all those
mathematics if I wanted to. But.....unbelievably and to my utmost
surprise I never did catch up with his speed.
It
then dawned on me that I had just interacted with a mathematical
genius.
I
was never mistaken about this, because before we ever graduated from
100 level to the next level, Philip was already being engaged in
different departments at college to even help the seniors up to 500
level class the highest level then with their mathematical problems.
All the lecturers and students accorded unto him awe for his
mathematical prowess.
Philip
was really talented!.

How
did I discover Freddy (the gifted)? To be Contd.
My encounter with Freddy, the gifted.
Yes, encounter is the word. I and a group of friends decided to engage in a group
discussion in other to brainstorm on some topics in biology and chemistry prior to an
examination we would soon be sitting at.
It was night time, each had been chewing on the topics on his own just a few hours to what I would call the brainstorming session.
On second thought, I decided to check up on each person involved just to see how each personwas getting ready. It was this fellow Freddy that caught my attention.......
He wasn'tgetting ready at all. Far from it. I met him at a shelve corner just playing
around and later scanning through some unrelated journals. I said to myself, "I wonder how this fellow will not falter when the group discussion session commences".
Everyone had their rounds on the subject matter and topic of discussion. When it was
Freddy's turn to share his own understanding of the topic at hand. He amazed us all. He handled the topic with unusual clarity, clarifying and driving home his points with amazing accuracy with undisputable facts and landmarks of someone with a photographic memory. His insight and conceptual grasp of the subject at hand was so broad and deepthat we all knew we were no match for this........ let me call it escapade. He left no
detail.
It was as if we were in the presence of the author himself.
He was so flexible at it, and with it, mixing rigidity with flexibility. The perspective
dimension from which he was driving home his points were just stunning and so deep.
A mercurial understanding of the subject matter was so much at play.
In all fields, subjects and topics Freddy was so much at home and relaxed.
Throughout our course of study, Freddy always almost got 100% grade in all subjects. Most cases 100%, i.e those that had to do with pure calculation wherein the instructor had no control of the grade to apportion.
For those to which they had control, they always acknowledged to the fact that Freddy got everything right. they just had to grade him on a range between 70% to 100%.
Freddy was really gifted.
